Insights into the work of the Swiss Embassy in Bangkok in the field of political and human rights and small grants for local organizations

 

In his welcoming address, President Christian Brunner was delighted that the Swiss Society can now welcome speakers again. Stefanie Meier introduced the two present representatives of the Swiss Embassy who both came to Bangkok during the lockdown: The deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Conradin Rasi, and Mr. Matteo Fetz, Political and Economic Attaché. Within the broad activities of the section respectively of the embassy in the field of foreign policy, they concentrated on the topic of human rights in their presentation, from the definition to the priorities and principles to the implementation in Thailand. Conradin Rasi particularly emphasized the importance of topics such as freedom of expression, the death penalty, torture and minority rights in the context of Swiss Human Rights policy. In addition, the speakers also went into the relatively new focus of the embassy on business and human rights. They used practical examples to show how the Swiss representation tries to emphasize fundamental human rights, not least by supporting local civil society organizations. Mr. Rasi and Mr. Fetz also explained why they mainly focus on Thailand for the latter, since the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation is very active in Cambodia and Laos. 

Einblicke in die Arbeit der Schweizer Botschaft in Bangkok im Bereich Menschenrechte und Unterstützung von lokal tätigen Organisationen

Präsident Christian Brunner freute sich in seiner Begrüssung sehr, dass die Swiss Society nun wieder Referentinnen und Referenten begrüssen kann. Stefanie Meier stellte die zwei anwesenden Vertreter der Schweizer Botschaft vor, die beide während des Lockdowns nach Bangkok gekommen sind: Der stv. Missionschef, Herr Conradin Rasi, sowie Herr Matteo Fetz, der politische und ökonomische Attaché. Innerhalb der breiten Aktivitäten der Sektion beziehungsweise der Botschaft im Bereich Aussenpolitik konzentrierten sie sich in ihrem Referat auf das Thema Menschenrechte, von der Definition über die Prioritäten und Prinzipien bis zur Umsetzung in Thailand. Besonders betonte Conradin Rasi die Wichtigkeit von Themen wie Meinungsfreiheit, Todesstrafe, Folter und Rechte von Minderheiten im Zusammenhang mit der Schweizer Menschenrechtspolitik. Zudem gingen die Referenten auch auf den relativ neuen Schwerpunkt der Botschaft im Bereich Business und Menschenrechte ein. Sie zeigten mit praktischen Beispielen auf, wie die Schweizer Vertretung versucht, grundlegenden Menschenrechten Nachdruck zu verleihen, nicht zuletzt auch durch die Unterstützung von vor Ort tätigen Organisationen der Zivilgesellschaft. Herr Rasi und Herr Fetz erklärten zudem, weshalb sie sich bei letzterem vor allem auf Thailand konzentrieren, da die Direktion für Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit (DEZA) sehr aktiv ist in Kambodscha und Laos.
