After the get together on Friday evening with our new general consul Pierre Chabloz, over 30 members met for a Saturday trip to visit the Swiss Sala at Wat Yan, the Silverlake Winery, the Discovery Garden from Hans Fritschi and a wonderful Dinner at Ristorante da Marco by the Swiss Sabai Resort. Before the return trip to Bangkok, over 10 members met for a Sunday brunch at Casa Pascal. Tue 17.December 2019 41 members and guests. attended our last get together this year with the interesting speech on Hearing Aids by Josef Schnyder. The Chesa team spoiled us with a special Christmas menu, thank you very much. Thanks also go to the B9, which offered all the year a voucher for our speaker. 71th Get Together in Pattaya Friday 29 March 2019 with Michael Schlatter owner German Dental 30 members and friends of the Swiss Society Bangkok joined this Event at Fredy Schaub's Local Brunos in Pattaya. After an interesting talk about teeth in the age we were spoiled with a first class menu with enough time to for interesting discussions. Two young Swiss, Andreas Wanner and Dominic Schuler told us how they met when they were working as investment banker for UBS. They got bored about their shit-job and developed the idea of an innovative public toilet concept – from shit to shit……. Mister Loo is an innovative public toilet concept from Switzerland offering clean restrooms and state-of-the-art refreshing facilities to international tourists and local travellers in a safety environment at highly frequented public locations like tourist attractions, markets, beaches, pedestrian zones as well as train, bus, and gas service stations in Thailand and Vietnam. Knut Sierotzki informierte über das Ausbau Projekt der Schweizer Schule in Minburi, und Simon Dörig half Ihm die zahlreichen Fragen dazu zu beantworten. Der Höhepunkt des Abends war das Fondue Chinoise mit Australischem Angus Rindfleisch. Herzlichen Dank an Thomas und René und das ganze Chesa Team. Tue 20th November Chesa 25 members and friends at the get together with Regula Schmidhauser Regula Schmiedhauser lives since 2012 Bangkok and works as Blogger for an international company. She gave us an overview of the significance of multimedia in the world, Thailand and Switzerland. Worldwide 3.4 Billion (44%) are active multimedia users, in Thailand 51 Million (74%) and in Switzerland 4.4 Million (52%). The 6 dominant platforms are 1) Facebook, 2) YouTube 3) WhatsApp, 4) FB messenger, 5) Wiexin/Wechat and 6) Instagram. The in Thailand popular platform "line" ranks only 19. Interesting figures are as well the number of mobile subscriptions in Thailand of 93.61 Million (135%) whereas in Switzerland only 10.75 Million (126%). A reason for this difference might be the coverage of PC owners in Switzerland. Our observation that mobiles are used much more than in Switzerland are shown with following figures: Active mobile social users in Thailand 46 million (67%) and in Switzerland 3.7 million (43%). Zürcher Zünfte und Sächsilüüte Dienstag 16 Oktober 2018 im Chesa mit Luca Sigg Over 30 members joined this GetTogether, to listen to Lucas speech about Sechseläuten. The Sechseläuten (Zürich German: Sächsilüüte) is a traditional spring holiday in the Swiss city of Zürich celebrated in its current form, usually on the 3rd Monday of April, since the early 20th century. The roots of the festival go back to medieval times when the first day of summer working hours was celebrated in the guildhalls across the city. City ordinances strictly regulated the length of the working day in that era. During the winter semester the workday in all workshops lasted as long as there was daylight, but during the summer semester (i.e. starting on Monday following vernal equinox) the law proclaimed that work must cease when the church bells tolled at six o'clock. Sechseläuten is a Swiss German word that literally translates into "The six o'clock ringing of the bells". Changing to summer working hours traditionally was a joyous occasion because it marked the beginning of the season where people had some non-working daylight hours. Burnings of Böögg figures in spring are attested in various places of the city from the late 18th and early 19th century, without direct connection to the Sechseläuten. The combination of the Sechseläuten parade and the burning of an official Böögg was introduced in 1902. But still today the guilds accept only men as member. There is a lady-guild, but the are not allowed to join the official parade….

20 March 2018 Chesa A formidable EARTHQUAKE of a magnitude of at least 7.0 on the Richter Scale hits the small island in Léogâne, 30km south-west of Port-au-Prince, the capital, at a depth of only 14km, destroying thousands of buildings and disrupting life. Swiss Society Bangkok's member, Urs Berner, was present in Port-au Prince as the disaster struck. He accepted to share with us a few memories of this tragic event as he recalls how the Swiss authorities tried to help their citizens in the area as well as bringing relief to the wracked country. Die Sieger des Tages 1.Platz Juan ( nachdem er die letzten zweimal den Trostpreis erhalten hatte) 2 Platz Charles nur knapp dahinter der 3 Platz ging an Heidi die beste Dame des Abends. SSB Raclette 2019 - SOLD OUT Success was anticipated ahead of the event as the Raclette party was fully booked and there even was a waiting list for this evening. Thanks to some «no shows», a few additional guests had the opportunity to join, and the SSB President could welcome 136 guests in the beautiful garden of the Swiss Embassy in Bangkok. The highlight was our new Ambassador, Mrs. Helene Budliger Artieda, with her first words to the Swiss Society Bangkok. Her charming speech attracted the attention of the audience. At this point we seize the opportunity to thank the Embassy for the sponsored Swiss wine for the aperitif. It was interesting to learn that Bangkok was the most favorite vacancy for ambassadors in the year 2019. Due to her engaged and outstanding commitment during her previous assignment in South Africa and before as Resource Director within the EDA, Mrs. Helene Budliger Artieda was appointed as the Swiss Ambassador in Bangkok. Gourmet Primo was taking care of the catering under the lead of Luca Sigg (Brasserie 9) and *supervised* by Linus AE Knobel (CEO Bangkok Air Catering). A crew of 29 employees, thereof 9 chefs with 7 different nationalities from 4 branches of the BAC group were responsible for a perfect service and, as usual, excellent quality of food. The exquisite starter, a Swiss gourmet platter, was served at the table. Then the guests had the opportunity to chat with old friends and new faces while waiting in the short lines at the 7 raclette stations. A sound system, a computer, and a coffee machine caused some excitement: this was just too much for one socket and its fuse! However, this problem was solved rapidly by the technicians of the embassy. We all enjoyed the pleasant evening that ended with a delicious fruit salad (of course with some Kirsch) and delicious ice cream. Our thanks go to the organizers of the SSB board, to the Swiss Embassy for their hospitality and to the catering team of the BAC group.

National Museum Bangkok, Sonderführung 9 Nov. 2019 Unter sachkundiger Führung von Werner Schäppi hatten wir Einblick in die breite Sammlung von thailändischen Kunstobjekten und Antiquitäten aus verschiedenen historischen Zeitepochen. Wir besuchten die Buddhai-Sawan-Kapelle mit ihren bemerkenswerten Wandmalereien und der am zweitmeisten verehrten Buddha Statue Thailands. Zum Schluss hatten wir noch Gelegenheit, die grandiosen königlichen Bestattungswagen zu bestaunen, die aus Teak hergestellt sind, mit vergoldeten Holzschnitzereien verziert und bis zu 18m lang, 11.2 m hoch und 13.7 t schwer sind. Diese Trauerkutschen werden auch heute noch bei der Beerdigung von Mitgliedern der königlichen thailändischen Familie verwendet.

Jassturnier 7. September 2019 Einmal mehr trafen sich unsere eifrigen Bangkok Jasser zum Jass Turnier der Swiss Society. Man sammelte sich um 13.30 in der Lobby der Brasserie 9 und, während die alteingesessenen Spieler sich auf ein Wiedersehen mit alten Bekannten freuten, schauten einige neue Spieler noch etwas nervös in die Runde. Um 14.00 Uhr war es dann ernst und die erste Runde startete. Es gab drei Runden à 12 Spiele zu jassen. 12 Spieler kämpften um jeden einzelnen Punkt. Es wurde diskutiert und debattiert, geschoben, getrumpft und gestochen, Unterzüge gemacht und Böcke geschlagen. Nach getaner Arbeit und nachdem sich während dem Tournier alle etwas kennengelernt hatten und neue Bekanntschaften geschlossen wurden, begab sich die fröhliche Gesellschaft zu einem feinen Nachtessen im Saal der Brasserie 9. Gespannt wartete man auf die Resultate und als dann nach dem Dessert Stefan zur Preisverteilung aufrief, schlugen einige Herzen wohl etwas schneller. Das Resultat war dann doch etwas erstaunlich, hat doch das «schwache» Geschlecht einmal mehr bewiesen, dass sie eben doch besser als die Herren sind. Unter den drei besten Spielern waren nämlich gleich zwei Damen zu finden. 1.Preis Lydia Ruehli 2.Preis Bruno Odermatt 3.Preis Hop Phan Es war ein gelungener Nachmittag. Herzliche Dank an Stefan Kuhn, der das ganze hervorragend organisiert hat und an die Brasserie 9, die uns die Räumlichkeiten zur Verfügung stellten und uns ein feines Menu auftischten. Wir freuen uns alle schon auf den nächsten Jass Event.

Christmas Brunch 9. Dezember 2018 Exklusiv Interview mit dem Samichlaus Bereits zum zweiten Mal empfingen die professionellen Gastgeber Linus A.E. Knobel und Luca Sigg die 74 SSB Mitglieder in der rustikalen Brasserie 9. Währendem die „Grossen“ den selbstgemachten Eierlikör zum Apero genossen, vergnügten sich die „Kleinen“ im Spielzimmer unter der engagierten Betretung der RIS Swiss Section. Das reichhaltige und qualitativ hochstehende Buffet eignete sich hervorragend um ausgiebig zu schlemmeren. Der mit Spannung erwartete Samichlaus erzählte den 22 kleinen und 54 grossen Kindern dass er ein moderner Chlaus ist; •nebst den konventionellen Informationsquellen arbeitet er auch mit Internet und Facebook •natürlich hat er auch ein Tablet, Geschichten liest er aber lieber aus seinem goldenen Buch vor. Gemeinsam wurde nun Merry Christmas gesungen um sich die „Geschänkli“ vom Chlaus zu verdienen. Auch für den Samichlaus gab es eine Überraschung; in dem sehr gut bestückten Weinkeller der Barasserie 9 durfte er sich eine feine Flasche auslesen und entschied sich für einen seiner Lieblingsweine, ein spanischer Rioja. Bei dieser Gelegenheit konnten wir mit ihm das Interview führen: •Heute lebt der Samichlaus in Min Burri, ursprünglich kommt er aber aus dem Heidiland in den Schweizerbergen. Seinen Lebensunterhalt verdiente er in der Schweiz, in England und Thailand als Chemiker und Lehrer. •Ob er seine vielseitigen Sprachkenntnisse im zivilen Leben oder als Chlaus braucht? Er spricht fliessend Schweizer- und Schriftdeutsch, Thailändisch, Französisch und Englisch. •Dank der fast vegetarischen Ernährung, ab und zu mit einem feinen Stück Fleisch und einem Glas Rotwein ist er topfit zum Golf spielen, angeblich mit Handicap 36. •Als Weinliebhaber musste er den früheren Weinkeller mit 1200 Flaschen hier in Thailand aus bekannten Gründen eher mit Bier ersetzen. •Sein grösstes Hobby ist nun das Reisen. •Grundsätzlich schimpft er nie mit Kindern, auch wenn von Eltern gewünscht, bevorzugt loben, motivieren und fördern. Vermutlich fehlen darum der grosse Sack und die Rute bei seiner Ausrüstung.

Saturday 15 Dezember bereits zum dritten mal in diesem Jahr organisierte Stefan Kuhn den Jassevent erstmals mit mehr als 20 Teilnehmern davon 5 Damen . Nach einigen erfolgreichen Anlässen im Rembrandt Hotel war das Ziel für den ersten Anlass in der Brasserie 9 ziemlich hoch gesteckt, doch unser Gastgeber Luca Sigg hat die Erwartungen mehr als erfüllt. Nach einem gemütlichen Jassnachmittag durften wir ein hervoragendes Dinner genissen . Die Gewinner des Nachmittags. 1. Stefan 2. Jakob (Jack) 3. Kurt und als beste Dame Monika welche zusammen mit Herbert extra aus Phuket angereist war. Das erste mal dabei und auch einen Preis gewonnen Lydia Rühli. 24 November 2018 The traditional raclette party took again place in the wonderful garden of the residence of the Swiss Ambassador Ivo Sieber and his wife Gracita. 150 participants joined this event and enjoyed the excellent food prepared by Bangkok Air Catering. We were served a cold platter containing a mix of cold meet imported from Switzerland with freshly baked bread. Then the smell of melted cheese covered the garden, telling us that the raclette buffet was open. As dessert we got Fresh Fruit Salad with Kirsch, Assorted Ice Cream and coffee sponsored by BonCafe.

Gartenparty Swiss Embassy 4 August 2018 412 Gäste davon 39 Kinder und 15 Jugendliche, verwöhnt von Gourmet Primo (Bangkok Air Catering) mit einer professionellen Crew von 35 Personen feierten den 727. Nationalfeiertag in der Residenz der Schweizerischen Botschaft.

8 SSB Mitglieder trafen sich zur jährlichen Pub Tour an der Sukkumvit Road in Bangkok. Los gings um 19:00 im Robin Hood pub, gefolgt von 4 weiteren Lokalen Wegen der Fussball Weltmeisterschaft waren die Pub’s auch sehr gut gefüllt. Der Hunger wurde dann im No Idea Pub gestillt, wo wir hervorragend bewirtet wurden. Guided tour of RONDA plant closed to Bangkok on 12 June 2018 The members of the Swiss Society Bangkok and the Swiss Thai Chamber of Commerce used the opportunity to see Swiss standards of precision in a Thai plant. Khun Kanchit Satarug, Managing Director, informed the visitors about the organization and the products made by RONDA. Mechanical and electronic components are manufactured by RONDA Thailand and assembled to complete movements that are then shipped to Hong Kong for worldwide distribution to customers. Besides simple parts, RONDA Thailand is producing several very complex parts for watches, including stop watch function, dual day, week and month indication, etc. These parts are sold to many famous watchmaking brands around the world. The tour around the plant was made in three groups; Peter Schuepbach, Senior Technical Department Manager, guided his group in English, Michael Seinige, Senior Department Manager, took the German speaking group and Khun Khanchai took the 3rd group in Thai language and showed them several departments of the big three-story building. Mr. Schuepbach and Mr. Seinige, both of them Swiss nationality, work at RONDA Thailand for more than 20 years. Very impressing was one big production hall where around 270 persons (most of them women) were working. To my surprise they didn’t use any special glasses or microscopes and they managed to assembly by hand very small components in an atmosphere of high concentration and silence. Unusual in Europa but very common in Thailand are the extensive social benefits RONDA offers to their 750 employees in this plant. Besides the salary, the insurance and the pension scheme, the staff is offered subsidise canteen food, free working uniform and free shuttle transport to the company and back home.

Lunch Event 26 April 2018 Arnoma Grand Bangkok Over 30 participated on the event SEA /Thailand in between US and China a new geopolitical situation. Henning Glaser elaborated a complex topic in a very fascinating way that could be understood by everyone. We had the honor to welcome our ambassador Ivo Sieber, the president of Swiss Thai Chamber of Commerce Bruno Odermatt and Luzi Matzig.

AGM 2018 at the Rembrandt Hotel on 14 March 2018 At the registration desk and the pre-cocktail the “good humored” attendees maintained existing relationships and made new contacts at the presumably 87th AGM since 1931. The Society counts 220 members 95 Family member , 125 Single member 315 Adults plus 40 kids, thereof 69 members and partners were present at the AGM. So 30 % of the members participated at the meeting which does not mean that the members are indifferent what happens within the SSB community, but it shows their confidence in the Society and their active board. The President, André Graber, lead sovereignly through the 12 agenda points and informed the members in an entertaining way about the successful activities in the year 2017. The Treasurer, Thomas Gerber, reported about the financial details 2017 and presented the budget 2018. The year 2018 shall end with a positive year-end finish (black figures). Niki Geissbühler and Hans Peter Meier left the board with a bottle of ETTER Kirsch and six new members were welcomed with big applause. Also Simon Rindlisbacher left the Committtee and was rewarded for his excellent work in the last six Years with 100% of the present votes as a new Honorary Member. The meeting ended in time. The interest in the following dinner was huge: 95 participants (members and guests) enjoyed the generous buffet dinner. The Rembrandt crew offered delicious Swiss dishes, Italian specialties, Thai delicacies, and international highlights.
